Minecraft mods are additions of features, and can do everything from adding a new dimension to making it so players can fly in survival.
What Can Mods Do?
Mods are capable of doing anything you can imagine. All the way from adding new dimensions, to making it so crafting items can be done automatically, and adding an entirely new tech tree. Most of the time mods will be bundled into "modpacks", these modpacks will contain multiple mods that work together to add more functionality than a single mod could add on its own. Modpacks will also typically come with configurations already inside, so there is not too much work needed on the users side.
How Mods are Loaded
In order for mods to be loaded into the game, you must be using a special type of server. If you are not using this special server type, then no mods will be loaded at all. The most common type of modded server is Forge.
Mods are loaded by Forge looking in the mods/
folder of the server to find files that end with .jar
. Once it has found all of the mods in the folder, it looks inside the mods to determine how it should load them and then loads the mods in a specific order to start the server.
How to Host a Modded Server
Modded Minecraft is much more fun with friends. In order to set up a modded server, everyone who wants to play on that server must be using the exact same mods. If the player does not have the same mods, they will not be able to join the server. This makes running a modded server more difficult than other types of servers, for this reason we recommend choosing a common modpack to start with if you have never hosted a modded Minecraft server before. Some popular modpacks that we have in the Click and Play Installer are:
